Some stories worth sharing this week:
- If you haven’t seen artist Will Puckett’s Matheson Bridge Mural at North Davidson Street, you ought to drive out to NoDa and see it. It’s not just a remarkable piece of historical art by a talented Charlottean. It’s potentially a model for public art in a city that has precious little of it – and for public-private partnerships among agencies to get cool stuff done in Charlotte.
- There’s another project afoot in the QC that's trying to bust through boundaries: “Southern Blend: A Dating Experiment,” a documentary video project and dialogue series that aims to document a social experiment in which people date across racial and ethnic lines for the first time. Crossroads is supporting the project, which announced open casting on Monday.
- It was already full to near-bursting, but it’ll soon be even more crowded at Central Piedmont Community College, the state’s largest, after the state legislature cut more than 10 percent from its budget.
- Another act by the General Assembly that’s going to have a significant effect on education: adding five days to the 2011-12 public school calendar.
- Finally, we know this happened outside of Charlotte, but it’s landed on news outlets in the Queen City and throughout the nation, and it seems like a parable for our times: James Richard Verone, a former Coca-Cola delivery man with a host of painful ailments, decided he would rob a bank of $1 in order to receive the free medical care offered him at the Gaston County jail.
