Residents of Matthews are invited to attend a free Cultural Learning Lunch on Saturday, August 22 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Matthews Community Center (100 East McDowell Street, Matthews, NC 28105).

The Cultural Learning Lunch is an opportunity for Matthews residents to learn more about the Montagnard community, a minority Vietnamese population who reside primarily in the Crestdale community in Matthews. During the lunch, Montagnard residents will share information about their culture and history.

The Cultural Learning Lunch is presented by the Arts & Science Council (ASC), Boat People SOS, a national organization serving the Vietnamese population, and the Matthews Community Center. The lunch is part of a broader Crestdale Community project funded by Crossroads Charlotte.

The Crestdale Community project is an initiative to preserve and celebrate the history of the Crestdale community and its diverse residents through the creation of art. The project will consist of a series of film-making, photography and fiber art workshops for Crestdale residents and will culminate in a final celebration/exhibition event at the Matthews Community Center in November 2009. During the last hour of this event, attendees will have an opportunity to experience photography, filmmaking, and fiber art workshops. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign up for future workshops.

Project partners include the Arts & Science Council, Crossroads Charlotte, The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography & Film, the Matthews Community Center, the Crestdale Community Organization, Filmmaker, Dorne Pentes and Fiber Artist, Sunya Folayan. The project is funded by the Arts & Science Council through a Crossroads Charlotte grant.
